The School of Materials Athena SWAN working group meets regularly to develop the application, to review relevant statistics, and to identify where policies and practices could further support the careers of women in the School.
Dr Lucy Bosworth
Role within the School: Post-Doctoral Researcher
Has been a PDRA at the University since 2009, following straight on from her PhD studies. She is getting married next summer to a clinical research fellow also at the University.
Ms Natasha Bhuiyan
Role within the School: Final year of PhD studies
Also undertakes demonstration work for undergraduate cell biology lab classes. She graduated with a 1st class (Hons) in Biomedical Material Science from the University.
Dr Michele Curioni
Role within the School: Research Fellow with PG teaching duties
Married and wife presently just returning to work full time from maternity leave. Has two young children aged 6 months and 3 years at the time of writing.
Dr Sarah Haigh
Role within the School: Lecturer in Materials Characterisation
Joined the University of Manchester in 2010 from Oxford University. She is married (no children).
Mrs Sandra Kershaw
Role within the School: Recruitment and Admissions Manager for the School of Materials and CEAS
Manages a team of eight staff. She has four children, and in 2001, when her youngest child started full-time education she returned to work full-time.
Dr Colin Leach
Role within the School: Reader in Materials Science and Director of Teaching
He and his wife have maintained full-time jobs whilst bringing up two daughters.
Dr Zhu Liu
Role within the School: Senior Lecturer in Surface Engineering
She is married to a Professor at the University. Her daughter was born in January 2002 and returned to work full-time after 4 months’ maternity leave.
Prof Bill Sampson
Role within the School: Professor in Materials Modelling and Deputy Head of School
Married and has two adult daughters and an adult son; the latter is an undergraduate at Manchester and a wheelchair user.
Ms Nicky Snook
Role within the School: Head of School Administration
Joined the University as a junior administrator in 1996, following which she worked as Head of School Administration in 2 other Schools before joining Materials in 2013. She is in a civil partnership.
Ms Rachel Studd
Role within the School: Senior Lecturer in the Design and Fashion Business Group and a Programme Director
Married with two children aged 4 and 17 months (maternity leave of 6 months each time returning to work full-time). Older child has just started School and younger is at the University linked nursery.
Prof Gary Warnaby
Role within the School: Professor of Marketing
His wife works in University administration (under a job-share arrangement). He has two grown-up stepsons and a daughter.
