Sarah O'Hana

Sarah O'Hana was trained as a jewellery designer at Loughborough University School of Art and Design and has been active in the field of contemporary jewellery for thirty years. After many years of lecturing in the applied arts an interest in emerging technologies led Sarah to study for a PhD in the University of Manchester's School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering. Entitled "Laser processing for contemporary jewellery: a bridge between two cultures", this project focused on laser marking titanium for the production of jewellery, and the collaboration between artists and scientists that this work required. Finding mutual benefit at the interface of extreme interdisciplinary research continues to be her main interest.

The pendant has been created in response to the photograph by Anna T Valota and Xiang Li Zhong, Titania Sea Cliffs. Not only do the materials and processes have a shared resonance but also the act of looking so close at a material is replicated in the pendant by the inclusion of a convex optical lens. In this way the wearer can also share with the authors the wonder of magnification.
