Professional biography

Arthur Wilkinson graduated in Polymer Science & Technology (Physics) from UMIST in 1984 and obtained his PhD, also from UMIST, in 1990. He then spent two years conducting Polyurethanes Research and Development for Dow Chemicals (Europe), before joining Manchester Metropolitan University as a Lecturer in Polymer Science & Technology. In 2006 he joined the University of Manchester as a Lecturer in Polymer and Composites Processing. His research interests involve the science and technology underpinning processing-structure-property relationships in multi-phase polymer systems; including nanocomposites, blends, block copolymers and structural fibre-composites. With the launch of the Northwest Composites Centre (NWCC) his studies of structural polymer composites have expanded to include rapid, energy-efficient moulding processes and joining methods for polymer composites structures.

Current research projects

  • Studies of reaction-induced phase separation in epoxy resin nanocomposites (with Professor John Stanford)
  • Deformation micromechanics of hybrid carbon nanotube/layered silicate polypropylene nanocomposites (with Professors Bob Young and John Stanford)
  • Structure development during the processing of flexible polyurethane foam (with Professor John Stanford)
  • Rapid composite processing by fluid-controlled heat transfer (with Dr Richard Day)
