Dr Chris Martin

Chris trained as a technical mechanical engineer from 1970 to 1975 with the Michelin Tyre Company in Stoke-on-Trent and in 1983 moved to the Royal Ordnance Division of the Ministry of Defence Procurement Executive. Later, at the University of Keele he worked in the research workshops before studying physics at undergraduate and postgraduate levels graduating with a MPhil and a PhD in physics in 2001. During this period he gained considerable experience in developing and exploiting novel instrumentation at synchrotron sources for synthetic polymer research.

Following Research Fellowships and Post-Doctoral positions in the Physics and Life Sciences departments at Keele, Chris joined the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) working on the Synchrotron Radiation Source (SRS) at Daresbury Laboratory in 2003. At Daresbury he was Senior Station Scientist on MPW6.2, the Time-Resolved Materials Processing beamline, supporting the X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Non-crystalline Powder Diffraction (NCD) communities until the facility's closure in September 2008.

In October 2008 Chris joined the School of Materials at the University of Manchester in the post of Senior Experimental Officer with responsibility for the specification, building and commissioning of the Henry Moseley X-ray Imaging Facility (HMXIF) in the Manchester Materials Science Centre under the direction of Professor Philip Withers. Chris continues to work at Manchester as manager for the HMXIF.

Extensive hillwalking, rock climbing, ice climbing, alpine climbing and potholing experience. First British rock climbing ascent in Norway. Discovery and extension of a new cave system in Wester Ross, Scotland. 'Compleater' number 2876 of the 'Munros' (the 284 mountains in Scotland with a height exceeding 3000 feet). Interested in amateur photography.

Chris' interests have an emphasis on the design and exploitation of advanced instrumentation for research. Current development projects involve:

• (i) Purpose-designed in-situ tensile/compression and sample rigs and furnaces for use on the HMXIF's imagers in time-resolved and quasi time-resolved experiments on a wide variety of materials;
• (ii) High time-resolution CT imaging (60 fps) in collaboration with Rapiscan Systems Ltd;
• (iii) High energy (1-4.5 MeV) CT imaging in collaboration with the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) and Rapiscan Systems Ltd;
• (iv) Detectors for 3D 'colour' imaging as part of the High-Energy X-ray Imaging Technology (HEXITEC) project in collaboration with STFC and funded by the EPSRC.
