Professional biography

Joao Fonseca obtained his PhD in Materials Science in 2002 at the University of Leeds and worked as a research associate in Manchester before being appointed a lecturer in 2005. Joao works in the Materials Performance Centre, a research alliance established by BNFL with The University of Manchester in 2002. He is a member of the national council of the British Society for Strain Measurement, where he chairs the scientific and technical committee.

His research focuses on the complex, multi-scale behaviour of polycrystalline metal deformation. He works on characterising and modelling the inherently heterogeneous nature of metal deformation and its effects on materials performance. He is particularly interested in modelling intergranular and intragranular interactions during deformation using crystal plasticity finite element modelling and understanding how these can be introduced into current failure models of processes such as fatigue, cleavage fracture and stress corrosion cracking. This work is supported by in-situ studies of deformation, using synchrotron and neutron diffraction and full-field optical techniques such as image correlation (IC) and electronic laser speckle interferometry (ESPI).
