Professional biography
John Humphreys obtained his MA and DPhil in Metallurgy at Oxford, where he also carried out postdoctoral research. He then moved to London, where he worked at Imperial College, as a lecturer, reader and professor until moving to Manchester in 1990. His research is mainly concerned with the microstructures and textures developed during the deformation and annealing of aluminium and other alloys. Major areas of interest include the development of high resolution Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) and its application to the quantification of microstructures, the development of inhomogeneous microstructures during deformation, mechanisms of recrystallization and the modelling of microstructural evolution. He maintains a web site, http://www.recrystallization.info which contains information on recrystallization and a collection of videoclips of SEM, TEM and optical microscopy experiments on deformation and annealing.
