Summer Schools
For the last three years, the School of Materials, in collaboration with the Smallpeice Trust, has run a Residential Summer School to give students in Years 9, 10 and 11 an insight into the fascinating world of Materials Science. This provides the opportunity to learn all about the research and development work at the University and engage in hands-on activities, putting science into practice with the help of world-class scientists and engineers.
In 2010 ran two summer schools, Engineering Materials where students focused on how materials are applied to engineering problems, especially for transport, and Sports Materials which demonstrated how new technology in materials is used to enhance sports performance wear.

IOM3 Open Days
We are always happy to welcome school groups to visit our facilities and take part in activities at the School. With the help of the IOM3 School Affiliates Scheme, every November we welcome sixth formers to an open day at the Material Science Centre. Students get the chance to try out our state of the art facilities, such as the Scanning Electron Microscope, and try some hands on materials testing activities.
- If you school would be interested in becoming a member of the Schools Affiliate Scheme contact Diane Aston or see this website for further details.
Taster Sessions
The School covers a wide range of research from jet engines to recycled paper. We offer a range of taster sessions, for school students from Year 7 upwards, in Materials Testing, Technical Textiles, Nuclear Materials and Biomedical Materials. The sessions can be arranged to enrich learning as part of the National Curriculum or give students a taste of a range of different materials applications.
- For more details contact Outreach Administrator Max Rowe.
Master classes
As part of our schools enrichment programme we offer A-level and Diploma master classes on
• Tensile Testing
• Corrosion
• Electrochemistry
• Nanotechnology
• Smart Materials
• Polymer Technology
• Biomedical Materials
• Crystallography
These sessions last 2 hours and cover in more depth areas relating to the Science Curriculum. We provide a "hands on" lab session to give a taste of materials science at undergraduate level whilst enhancing school teaching in physics, chemistry and engineering.
- If you would like to book a Master class session for your school please contact Outreach Administrator Max Rowe
Discover Days
Do you want to find out more about degrees courses in Materials? Then a Discover Day at Manchester might be the thing for you.
Discover Days at Manchester offer year 12 students the chance to gain real insight into degree programmes they might study at this University. They provide a great opportunity for participants to gain first-hand experience and make informed decisions about their university choices before the start of the UCAS application process.
The days combine subject-overview talks, careers information, a mini-lecture, workshops and a campus tour led by undergraduates from the relevant discipline area, including plenty of time for students to put their own queries to academics and those who already study here.
Programme
You will spend a full day in the School of Materials where you will take part in:
- Materials lecture and lab sessions
- Choice of interactive workshops, delivered by academic staff and postgraduate students
- Careers in Materials talk
- Campus and departmental tour led by current students
- Question-and-answer session with academic staff and/or current undergraduate students
The next 'Discover Materials Day' will be held in 2011.
