Working with us

Collaborative research

The School of Materials has a diverse research portfolio with world class facilities and academic expertise which can be exploited to create flexible, innovative and professional collaborations with industry.

Our research extends across areas of strategic importance to the world's economy and quality of life such as aerospace, transportation, ceramics, biomaterials, metals, nuclear industry, textiles, paper and composites.

Your company could become a partner in the Schools research and benefit by taking advantage of the expertise available in the university and its partners.

Each research project is unique and can be tailored to your requirements, both in technical content and organisation.

Commissioned Research Project

You could approach us with a specific research brief in mind - we would then undertake a commissioned research project on your behalf. This may be convenient if your company does not have relevant expertise or its own in-house research base.

Collaborative Research Project

Your company could enter into collaborative research with the university, working together on specific collaborative projects or within more speculative research partnerships. These projects combine the expertise of your company with that of the university to benefit both parties. Government funding is available to support collaborative research projects and we can provide guidance on tapping into suitable funding streams.

Commercialising research

The University of Manchester Intellectual Property Limited (UMIP) is the managing agent of The University of Manchester for intellectual property commercialisation.

UMIP acts as a bridge between industry and the Manchester academic community, managing and translating the technology from the laboratory to commercial application and facilitates the commercialisation of research through the licensing of technology and the creation of spinout and partner companies.

Sponsoring our students

Your company could take this opportunity to work with experienced graduates who can provide cutting edge research focussed on your business needs.

By sponsoring a student you have the opportunity to fund the work of exceptional students and to encourage research relevant to your industry. The Schools Course Directors will work with you to match a student with skills and interested specific to your industry sector.

You have the option to sponsor a Masters student through their course or to sponsor a dissertation project, lasting five months, during which time an MSc student will carry out academic research on a specific project in your business.

Your company will be acknowledged on the School website and other promotional literature.

Postgraduate Open Days

It is extremely important that we work with industry to promote the value of postgraduate experience in the field of Materials to undergraduates and professionals in industry. The Postgraduate Open Day is held each year in November / December and is designed to generate awareness of the postgraduate study opportunities available at the School and to promote the value of postgraduate study for future employment.

The Open Days include presentations by senior academic staff, current students and industry; an exhibition area for the School and industry to show-case opportunities for postgraduates; and a networking session allowing all attendees to speak informally to staff, students and industry personnel.

We invite our industry contacts to attend the event to talk about the value they put on employees with postgraduate experience and qualifications. This event is not a direct recruitment event for companies, but is a chance to promote the importance of postgraduate study, as well as an important awareness-building exercise for the company.

At the event held in 2008, we were delighted to welcome back industry representatives from BAE Systems, Corus, Nexia Solutions, Rolls-Royce and Lloyd's Register. Our next Open Day will take place on 26 November 2008 and we welcome new companies to join us at the event as exhibitors or presenters.
