Cummins is a world leading company in diesel turbo charger technology, it is a global corporation that design, manufacture, distribute and service engines and related technologies, including fuel systems, controls, air handling, filtration, emission solutions and electrical power generation systems.

Company highlights have included the world's first turbocharger with a cast titanium impeller technology and another world first, the commercial Variable Geometry turbocharger.

The turbocharger presents a number of challenges to materials engineers owing to its dynamic nature which is driven by automotive legislations and also a continued demand for enhanced turbo performance, coupled with the extreme harsh operating conditions. A wide range of materials are utilised from cast irons through to superalloys with a continuous drive to develop current materials and new materials for both enhancement of performance and reduction in manufacturing costs.

I enjoy working within a dynamic global industry which continues to challenge my materials expertise on a daily basis, which is backed up with a very strong professional development framework. I am an active member of a team of highly qualified material engineers providing expertise on a global basis to both colleagues and customers. Through leading and supporting high profile research and development projects, providing technical support to worldwide production facilities and detailed failure analysis on failures in the field.

Cummins Turbo Technologies hold PhD qualifications in very high regard and I continue to conduct research programs with members of the Materials Science Centre, The University of Manchester.
