Research excellence

A research degree from the School and the University is held in the highest esteem and recognised worldwide. Many of our graduates work in the most prestigious institutions and organisations throughout the world.  The School of Materials at The University of Manchester is the largest school for Materials Engineering in Europe and has the greatest "Research Power" as determined by the 2008 RAE and offers an unrivalled breadth of research in Materials.

The School provides first-class opportunities and facilities for our students to study specific subjects in-depth to a postgraduate research degree level. There are flexible study packages available, as well as an extensive range of PhD studentships. Many of our research students are sponsored by a variety of School, University and industry resources.

Much of the School's research is multidisciplinary, and students from a variety of science, engineering and management backgrounds, can apply their first degree to a project dealing with important real-life issues. The research is industry-driven, finding direct application in meeting the needs of the School's industrial partners.

The School's research is organised into the following ten research groups, although research projects often involve researchers in other groups, other schools, other universities and industry.
