Master of Enterprise in Textiles and Fashion
Programme aims and objectives
The aim of the programme is to provide a portal that guides graduates of Textiles and Fashion into the enterprise culture. Areas include:
- Textile design
- Fashion design
- Fashion retail (retail/store concepts; retail services)
- CAD (textiles, fashion and retail)
- Textile Technology
- Clothing Technology
Graduates are frequently drawn to setting-up their own companies to exploit their creative ideas. The majority of these initiatives fail due to a lack of technical/financial/managerial skills rather than as a result of defective creative ideas. This programme, in collaboration with Manchester Science Enterprise Centre (MSEC), will provide the student with the latest technological know how in their chosen area together with the generic enterprise skills necessary for the successful launch and growth of a small company. The programme is also appropriate for those students who want to understand the role of innovation and knowledge transfer generally. Alumni of this programme have gone to work for both large and small companies as well as developing their own business.
Programme content and delivery
This multidisciplinary programme will allow students to choose optional programme units, together with a generic enterprise programme at MSEC, Full-time MEnt students would complete the programme within 12 calendar months. They would generally take 4 taught units over two semesters. The enterprise project, which involves project development, will proceed in parallel with the taught units throughout both semesters and the summer period. A supervisor from both MSEC and the School will be allocated to your project. Transferable skills are embedded in the units. These include presentation skills, report writing, project planning tools, using spreadsheets and GANTT charts, ICT and web based skills, negotiation skills, and forecasting and pricing skills. A self-diagnosis tool to assess development of transferable skills will be available.
The Enterprise Project
The student will be expected to have developed an Enterprise project idea prior to joining the programme. Textile and Fashion courses by their very nature lead the student to generate a product or service concept as part of their final year project/show and many of these students go on to develop a commercial product from their project concept. Often these products have been well developed visually/aesthetically but their manufacturing design leaves much to be desired. The elective programme units will provide and enhance the essential background to enable the student to develop the idea, product or service on a sound basis. The programme combines:
- Problem based learning in the form of the Enterprise project.
- Academic and industrial lectures
- Tutorial problems conducted individually and in teams
- Individual project, supported by the Manchester Science Enterprise Centre.
- Combination of continuous assessment and examination
