Experience at the University

Sarah Halton is currently studying the MSc in Polymer Materials Science and Engineering by part-time study. A UK student, Sarah completed her BSc in Chemistry at UMIST and now works in the coatings industry.  Sarah explains why she decided to complete her MSc part-time:

I chose this course because I am currently employed in the coatings industry and wanted to gain a deeper understanding of the materials I work with. When I read about the course it seemed like the perfect opportunity to achieve this and strengthen my CV.

In the short time I have been studying (I'm in my first of three years of part-time study) I have found that drawing on the knowledge and experience of the academics teaching the course has been invaluable. I am learning a great deal that I would not have gained from industrial experience alone.

Over the next few years I hope to complete my MSc and maybe go on to further study or research.

So, why did you choose Manchester?

Having studied at UMIST I was excited at the prospect of returning to study in Manchester. I had a great time and met loads of great people. The University is widely respected both locally and internationally.

And the main highlights so far?

I think one of the best bits for me is the diversity. You get to meet people from all over the world. Also, there are endless opportunities to try new things and get involved. Everyone I've met has been very friendly and more than happy to help you out (… and if you like shopping, you're in the right place!)

Do you have any final tips or advice for students looking to study a similar subject to you?

Go for it! It'll be hard work but worth it. With any course the more effort you put into it, the more you gain from it, and at the end of the day you can relax!
