Chukwuma Onuoha is from Nigeria and is currently studying for his MSc in Corrosion Control Engineering at The University of Manchester. Chukwuma, who completed his BEng in Polymer Engineering at the Federal University of Technology Owerri Nigeria, tells us about his ambitions for the future and his experiences in Manchester:
My life ambition is to be a professional corrosion engineer so that I can go back to my country and solve the oil pipeline corrosion problems. I chose The University of Manchester because of its international reputation of being the best place in the world to study Corrosion. Studying Corrosion here is an everlasting investment which I have given to myself; I have acquired grounded technical knowledge in corrosion engineering and will be returning to my country as an expert in this field.
Can you explain why you chose to study at Manchester?
I have a passion to study corrosion engineering and the quality of lectures and practicals I am receiving here makes me smile because I know that my future is bright. I really enjoy studying here because of the friendly atmosphere - the lecturers are always ready to assist you.
Not only did studying Corrosion Engineering at Manchester came highly recommended from my tutors, but graduates of The University of Manchester, especially from the School of Materials, are occupying top positions in multinational companies and leading universities in Nigeria. The performance of The University of Manchester's Alumni in Nigeria makes me very motivated, and the international recognition of my qualification from the University will open all doors of employment.
So what has been the main highlight of your time in Manchester?
I enjoyed the warm reception given to me by Sandra Kershaw and all the postgraduate staff here during my registration onto the course.
Subject-wise, I have enjoyed the opportunity to study Cathodic Protection with the best cathodic protection lecturer in the world, Professor David Scantlebury. Studying Corrosion here at The University of Manchester is a fulfilment of my life.
What are your plans for the future?
I would like to do my PhD in Corrosion Engineering here in the next few years, but first I would like to get some work experience.
Do you have any final tips or advice for students looking to study the MSc Corrosion Control Engineering course?
My advice for incoming students is that studying Corrosion Control Engineering at The University of Manchester is the key to success in life because of the outstanding quality of education and practicals we receive, and all this in a friendly environment.
