Experience at the University

Robert Robinson is currently completing the MSc Corrosion Control Engineering by online distance learning; originally from Glasgow, Scotland, Robert now lives and works in Houston, USA, as a Welding and Materials Consultant to ExxonMobil. Here he tells us about his background and his experiences of the MSc by online distance learning.

I chose the MSc Corrosion Control Engineering to supplement my existing Materials academia and experience – to learn and fully understand corrosion theory and principles which will assist me in becoming a more knowledgeable Materials and Welding Engineer. I chose Manchester because I had previously attended a materials summer school at UMIST during my BSc Honours (Materials based) Open University degree programme. I also attended 'Introduction to Corrosion Control Engineering Course' in 2000 which provided an overview and flavour of the MSc course content.

So what have been the main benefits and highlights of the course to you?

The course material is extremely detailed, directly relevant and aligned with industry topics and subjects, and the continuing academia keeps me involved in the theoretical aspects of materials and corrosion. The challenging technical content and assignments, discipline and structure of the course, and the flexibility to continue academia under full time employment have all been highlights of the course.

How have you found studying by online distance-learning?

I find online distance-learning to be an excellent mode of study for me and for those in full time employment. The Manchester course forum and content are very well presented, documented and easy to access. A lot of hard work has obviously been put in by a lot of the Manchester staff and this is reflected in the high quality material and support structure. High quality technical content / course notes and high level of tutor support have also been beneficial to me.

Finally, do you have any tips or advice for students looking to study a similar subject to you?

Without doubt I would recommend The University of Manchester MSc course for those involved in full time employment who wish to continue academic studies. The course has a very high technical content, is relevant to industry and is well presented and supported - an excellent forum to extend Materials and Corrosion knowledge.
