Advanced Composites Structures for Use in Demanding High Integrity Structural Applications

A four year EngD programme is offered jointly by the University of Manchester and Luxfer Gas Cylinder Company for developing the next generation composite structures. Recently, there has been a tremendous growth in the application of carbon composites as demonstrated by the launch of Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The candidate will have the opportunity to work with this exciting material of the 21st century at the cutting edge of industrial application.

The EngD Programme requires the candidate to study formal management courses, to undertake a structured professional development programme and to work closely with the sponsoring company. The project will be assessed not only for academic excellence but also on the incorporation of the research into business practice. On successful completion of an EngD the candidate receives a doctorate, just like a PhD, but applicants must take note that this is not an ordinary PhD because of the significant business and management components in the training.

Eligibility

UK graduates with 2.1 degree in mechanical, materials or mechatronics background, or EU graduates who satisfy residency requirements.

Funding

EngD funding in conjunction with Luxfer Gas Cylinder Co., covers fees and a tax free stipend of £17,600 p.a.

Start Date

This 4-year EngD is available for start September 2007.
