Professor Michael Preuss
"Research and academia is about being inspired, having ideas and being creative; not just number crunching."
The School of Materials is the largest grouping of its kind in Europe, with over 60 academic staff and around 1,000 students. We are home to national research centres in composites, energy materials and imaging of materials. We have a unique capability to process and analyse materials of all types, from textiles to alloys.
We were assessed in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008) as having the highest level of research power (quality multiplied by volume) of any university materials activity in the country. The RAE also revealed that 80% of our research activity is rated as being of internationally leading quality.
Our research is organised into seven research groups, although research projects often involve researchers in other groups, other schools in The University of Manchester. We also have strong research collaborations with other universities and industry.
We offer a huge range of opportunities to undertake postgraduate research with us at PhD and Masters level. For more information, see details of our postgraduate study opportunities.
