Textile Technology (Technical Textiles) [MSc]
Our Masters level programmes in Textile Technology aim to develop a high level of understanding of modern textile technology, preparing you for a career in the textile or related industry as a manager or researcher, or for an academic career. Graduates of these programmes are expected to understand the whole process of converting fibre materials to end product and be able to identify and analyse the appropriate materials and production routes for specific end products. You will also have developed the expertise and skill to conduct quality evaluation of textile products.
Accredited by the Institute of Minerals, Materials and Mining (IOM3) as meeting the Further Learning requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer.
The taught MSc programme comprises six taught units and a five-month research dissertation and the Masters by Research comprises three taught units and a 9-month research dissertation.
The taught units include:
- Technical Textiles - covering a wide range of topics in the latest developments of technical textiles, including nonwovens, composites and geotextiles, automotive textiles, impact protection, sportswear, and medical textiles.
- Textile Materials Performance and Evaluation - providing a wide range of topics in textile materials science, performance enhancement and testing that are fundamental for effective functioning in a technical capacity within any textiles or materials-related organisation, including man-made and natural fibres, microscopy and surface analysis and mechanical properties.
- Applied Manufacturing Processes - including fundamental and advanced fabric technologies and their importance in clothing and the technical textiles sector, and fabric joining technology. The emphasis will be on product and its relation to end use.
- Advanced Manufacturing Techniques - including advanced 3D weaving and flatbed knitting technologies and associated CAD systems. Advanced CAD/CAM for converting 2D fabrics to 3D products.
- Yarn Technology - including fibre preparation, ring and other modern spinning technologies, texturing, and yarn quality control.
- Colouration Technology - including principles of dyeing cellulosic substrates with both non-ionic and reactive dyes, the dyeing of synthetic fibres, and colour fastness.

2.2 UK Honours degree or equivalent, or an approved combination of educational qualifications and industrial experience.
IELTS 6.5 with no subscore below 5.5 or equivalent. The University offers three, five and ten-week pre-sessional English language courses for students who need to improve their English to meet the minimum requirements.
Graduates of this programme typically become managers or researchers in industry or university academics. Many graduates have become owner-managers of their own textile companies.
